One of the recognized ways to ensure the continuity of a company in the market is the product development. Therefore it is necessary to exchange information between suppliers and customers from the early stages, involving the conception of an idea, until the decision of launching a product which meets the needs and desires of the customers, identified over the process of the new offer construction. Academic literature indicates that the sales force can be a strong contributor in creating new products or modifying those already in use. It says that sales force is composed by professionals who are in constant contact with customers, listening to their demands and, more than that, watching their practices which often do not appear in an opinion survey. However, few of these researches, when studying the relationship between Sales and product development process (PDP), deal with the perspective of the salesman, who is the professional in direct contact with the customer, most addressing the vision of sales managers. Besides that, the review of literature shows the opportunity to study possible antecedents and consequents of the participation of the seller in PDP, and researches on product development and on the sales force field show variables that could be considered. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the participation of the seller in the process of product development, as well as its antecedents and consequents, considering the perspective of this professional. For this purpose it was tested in a single model the relationship between the participation of the salesman in PDP and variables such as task conflict, relationship conflict, information sharing, orientation of the company to innovation and discretionary effort of the seller, in order to understand their interdependencies. To meet such goal, initially it was necessary to propose a scale to measure the participation of the seller in PDP and subsequently propose and test the model of the antecedents and consequences factors of such participation. Through techniques of exploratory / confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling data collected from 250 sellers of medical device segment were analyzed. The theoretical contribution of this work was the use of an integrated model that allowed the joint evaluation of the variables, in order to understand their mutual relationships. In addition the following contributions were obtained: a) orientation of the company to innovation is an influencing factor on the participation of vendors in the PDP, but by itself is not the most significant; b) sharing information with the members of the sales force has a significant influence on their participation in the PDP, showing mediating action in the relationship between orientation of the company to innovation and participation of vendors in PDP; c) the perception of conflicts by the sellers showed no significant influence, positive or negative, on their participation in PDP; d) the participation of the seller in PDP has a positive influence on their discretionary effort. Finally as a management contribution of the study it was possible to offer for sales managers the identification of points regarding participation of salesman in PDP which eventually might not be considered when the activity is done by these professionals inside the companies and could be the focus when one wants dedication beyond what is in their seller’s job description.
