Turpentine, which is a liquid derived from the natural resin extracted from the pinaceous trees, consists mainly of a-pinene and ß-pinene, compounds used as raw material in the production of a-terpineol, an alcohol of great added value, widely used in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, cleaning and mining industries. There are several synthetic routes in the literature for the synthesis of a-terpineol, among them the hydration reaction via acid homogeneous catalysis assisted by heating and stirring, which is the traditional method used industrially. However, the product of interest is obtained with low yields, since a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, monoterpenes and alcohols is formed. In this context, the study of new techniques to obtain this compound becomes interesting. Thus, the present project aimed to study the effects of the ultrasonic probe in this reaction and to optimize the conversion of the pinenes and selectivity to the a-terpineol, through the reaction of hydration via homogeneous catalysis under the effect of ultrasound. The reactions were initially carried out at ambient pressure by varying the type of solvent and using several types of acid catalysts in equimolar quantity, taking samples every 10 minutes for 30 minutes for further analysis and evaluation of conversions and selectivities to the a-terpineol. After this initial step, having verified the best catalysts and solvents, the best wave amplitude was studied, as well as the optimum amounts of catalyst, water and solvent. All samples were analyzed by a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC/MS), comparing the retention times of the compounds in the reaction mixture with the times of some standard compounds. The most interesting result, starting with 14.7 mmol of turpentine, was obtained using 50 mol% of HNO3 (7.35 mmol), 1 mL of water, 4 mL of acetone, under sonication at a wave amplitude of 30%. Ultrasound proved to be an excellent source of alternative energy in the production of a-terpineol from turpentine, allowing it to be obtained with yields greater than 50% (90–100% conversion and 50–56% selectivity), at room temperature and reaction time of approximately 15 minutes. Some tests were also carried out to the study of scale-up and continuous flow, and the results obtained were very satisfactory. In comparison to the process used in industry and literature, conditions of greater selectivity, greater conversions, and a shorter reaction time were achieved
