With the advancement of aviation, increasingly larger and heavier aircraft models were created, leading to the necessary increase in the RSA (Runway End Safety Area), which is an area at the end of the runway intended to reduce damage in the event of overrun and/or undershoot. However, the increase in this area was not possible at some airports, due to the lack of space in the structure of the location, either because of the around civil constructions or the topography. However, in 1990, an extra security system was launched for the runways, the so called Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS), made mainly for these airports, whose spaces are limited. The EMAS must be installed at the end of the runway, keeping a safe distance from the end of the runway so that it does not suffer any damage due to the Jet Blast. For the construction of EMAS, there is currently only one manufacturer and two types of materials, the cellular concrete block and glass silica foam, although there are several studies for other types of materials. The sizing of the suppressor bed is very important, as one must take into account parameters such as the mix of aircraft at the airport, the size and weight of the aircraft and the inflation pressure of the landing gear tires, whereas the depth of the system grooves will vary according to these factors described. Upon entering the suppressor bed, the aircraft will crush its surface, generating the drag force that will cause the aircraft to be stopped safely, without damage to passengers and to the aircraft itself. In the present final course assignment, a bibliographical research was carried out on the system under analysis in terms of effectiveness, presenting examples of successful shutdowns carried out by EMAS; some airport accidents were mentioned, as well as possible causes and consequences; methodologies for risk analysis, include the ACRP Report 50, which was later applied in studies, with the software RSARA2, for Brazilians airports defined in the final course assignment, which showed satisfactory results, for example, with the implementation of the EMAS, the probability of occurrence of Santos Dumont and Jorge Amado – Ilhéus Airports, had a drop of 33,44% and 68,17%, respectively, proving to be a technically viable and effective option and; finally, an economic analysis was carried out for Santos Dumont Airport, which proved to be more viable to implement EMAS for a runway departure speed equal to 50 knots, which, when comparing the current expenses with the expenses if EMAS was implemented, a 13,99% reduction in annual costs was obtained.
