Trials of strength, paradoxes and competing networks in kaizen institutionalization
    (2023-05-04) CARNEIRO, W. N.; OYADOMARI, J. C. T.; AFONSO, P.; Dultra-de-Lima, R. G.; MENDONÇA NETO, O. R. DE
© 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: This paper seeks to understand kaizen in practice as it travels through time and space in the organisational setting. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative case study was carried out at a multinational company using mainly interviews for the data collection that were analysed from an actor-network theory (ANT) perspective. Findings: This paper finds that the company deals with a series of paradoxes while managing the kaizen process. Efficiency and quality paradoxes are the basis for starting kaizen projects. Furthermore, intrinsic, and extrinsic motivation, emerge in these processes, and paradoxes relate to how spontaneous ideas emerge in a deliberated context of cost-saving objectives. The supply chain finance team coordinates kaizen projects with the collaboration of plant managers, promoting the paradox of autonomy and control. In addition, as kaizen mobilises and enrols the actors, some trials of strength emerge, showing actors who oppose the kaizen network and create competing networks that mutually exist in the firm. Practical implications: This study presents valuable insights for professionals to successfully implement kaizen methodologies that take advantage of developing a network for problem-solving in organizations. Originality/value: This study highlights the supply chain finance team's role in enrolling the actors within a network built by practitioners engaged in kaizen projects. Usually, engineers, quality, or manufacturing teams lead kaizen projects, and only occasionally, accounting and financial teams participate, including multidisciplinary teams.

Uniaxial plastic strain effect on the corrosion-fatigue resistance of ISO 5832-1 stainless steel biomaterial
    (2023) NAVILLE, W.; Rodrigo Magnabosco; COSTA, I.
© 2023 Elsevier LtdOrthopaedic implants are used for fracture stabilization or orthopaedic reconstruction. During implantation and even in the implant accommodation process, there may be plastic strain and induction of residual stresses. This information creates a test procedure involving pre-strain, pre-conditioning in the corrosive environment and corrosion-fatigue tests. Two solutions were used, PBS (phosphate-buffered saline, neutral pH, recommended for corrosion evaluation tests) and SHA (saline solution with hydrogen peroxide and albumin pH 3.0). The results showed that, differently from PBS, SHA promoted localized corrosion, reducing fatigue resistance in all tested conditions. In addition, plastic pre-strain influenced the failure process.

Relationships among strategically aligned performance indicators, controls, and performance
    (2023-01-05) OYADOMARI, J. C. T.; BIDO, D. S.; MENDONÇA NETO, O. R. M.; AGUIAR, A. B.; Ronaldo Gomes Dutra-de-Lima
© 2023 Universidade de Sao Paulo. All rights reserved. This paper investigates if planning and cost controls and strategically aligned performance indicators (SAPI) are necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve a high level of organizational performance (OP). This article fills a gap in research by investigating elements of the management control system as necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve high levels of OP. Our findings show the reduced importance of planning controls and the great importance of aligning priorities and indicators to achieve high levels of performance. The paper is helpful for the practitioners that have to choose what kind of management controls are priorities to achieve high levels of performance. Management control frameworks are helpful for the literature and the practice. Still, the practitioners cannot implement the whole set of these components, considering the restriction of time and contingency aspects. The companies must choose what kind of management controls they have to implement, considering the goal of achieving performance. We used a quantitative methodology based on contingency theory in a survey of 89 Brazilian firms. The relationships were tested using partial least squares structural equations modeling (PLS-SEM), and necessary condition analysis (NCA) was applied to identify the management controls that are sufficient and necessary conditions for superior performance. The results of our study suggest that a high level of strategically aligned indicators is necessary to achieve a high level of performance. Results also suggest the importance of aligning strategic priorities with appropriated performance indicators, primarily defended in the normative (balanced scorecard) and empirical literature.

Analysis of IoT adoption for vegetable crop cultivation: Multiple case studies
    (2023) Scur G.; da Silva A.V.D.; Mattos C.A.; Goncalves R.F.
© 2023 Elsevier Inc.This study aims to fill a gap in the literature regarding the interrelationship between agricultural modernization and the internet of things (IoT), particularly in vegetable crop cultivation. Therefore, it focuses on understanding the barriers to and enablers of IoT adoption in planting and harvesting vegetables. We built a theoretical framework that incorporates the constructs of individual and organizational technology adoption models, linking behavioral, technological, organizational, and environmental factors. The framework is supported by the technology-organization-environment (TOE) and unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) models. We conducted in-depth interviews with 15 producers, three agricultural sector experts, and four suppliers. The results showed that only established producers implemented technology, indicating that organizational factors are decisive for the adoption of the IoT. Thus, the producer's size, knowledge, management level, and investment power affect IoT adoption. The theoretical model needs to be assessed according to producers' size, thereby revealing that organizational factors directly influence producers' behavioral issues.

Exploring the readiness of a Brazilian technological university during the COVID-19 pandemic
(2023-01-05) Gabriela Scur; Alliprandini D.H.; Chinaglia E.F.; Roberto Santos
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: The paper investigates the learning practices carried out by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the transition from strictly face-to-face to remote teaching in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It also analyses how these practices could be used as a baseline to support new perspectives on learning in the technological education field. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a single-case study of a Brazilian technological university. Findings: This study’s findings indicate that institutional planning and providing support to faculty and students were essential measures for a successful transition from face-to-face teaching to emergency remote teaching. Planning includes careful selection by the HEI of the tools that make a virtual learning environment and the strategies used to replace face-to-face teaching with emergency remote teaching. Our study points out the lessons learned during the pandemic. It presents guidelines for HEIs on how to prepare for a return to face-to-face teaching, embodying some learning dimensions such as synchronous or asynchronous, active or passive, individual or collective, and mediated or not mediated by information and communication technologies (ICTs). Originality/value: The paper provides reflections on the four dimensions to support decisions to leverage learning in each educational institution. This paper's main contribution is that the concept of teaching and learning must be comprehensive and inclusive according to the particular HEI context.

Development of a Digital Twin for smart farming: Irrigation management system for water saving
    (2023-02-15) ALVES, R. G.; MAIA, R. F.; Fabio Lima
© 2023 Elsevier LtdWorld agriculture faces the challenge of increasing its agricultural production by 50 % from 2012 to 2050, while reducing water consumption, as agriculture accounts for 69 % of all fresh water used on the planet. The use of technologies such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence, digital twins, among others, in the agricultural environment is increasing. Digital twin applied to agriculture is in its early stages of development. A digital twin is one in which data flows automatically and in both directions between a physical object and a virtual object. Withing this context, this paper presents a digital twin of a smart irrigation system in an application scenario. A digital twin for an irrigation system is one in which the physical components of the system, such as its sensors and actuators, are connected with their virtual representations. The system is composed of a FIWARE-based internet of things platform and a discrete event simulation model in Siemens Plant Simulation software. The internet of things platform is used to collect, aggregate and process soil, weather and crop data to calculate daily irrigation prescriptions. The simulation model is used to simulate the behavior of an irrigation system defined in an application scenario. The communication between the platform and the simulation model happens in real-time and is intermediate by an OPC UA server. A application scenario is considered to evaluate the behavior of the system and to evaluate, in future research, different irrigation strategies. The benefits of the systems proposed are twofold. First, evaluate the behavior of the Internet of Things (IoT) platform and an irrigation system before implementing both in the field. Second, enable the evaluation of different irrigation strategies in parallel with current farm practices. Within the system proposed, farmers can evaluate the behavior of the system before implementing in their farms and allowing the system to operate automatically. It is possible to infer that the system can improve farm operations and reduce water usage by allowing farmers to gather soil, weather and crop information and evaluate multiple irrigation strategies.

How absorptive capacity influences project performance
    (2022-11-29) Ronaldo Gomes Dultra-de-Lima; BRITO, L. A. L.
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: The absorptive capacity (AC) leads to firm performance and influences the development and evolution of capabilities and routines, but the influence of AC in projects remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of AC on project performance (PP) in the construction industry of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a survey questionnaire with project managers and collected 157 responses in the construction sector. They also used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multiple linear regression techniques to assess the data. Findings: The study provides empirical evidence that realized absorptive capacity (RAC) has a direct and indirect positive effect on PP. Conversely, the potential absorptive capacity (PAC) only indirectly impacts PP through project management practices (PMPs). PAC and RAC positively influence PMPs that in turn positively influence PP. The findings reinforce the relevance of AC to the development of internal knowledge for processes and routines, thereby enhancing PP. Practical implications: The findings provide practical implications: the AC influences PP by refining and adapting routines. Moreover, the consistent application of accepted practices is not enough for PP, but the ability to adapt, adjust and transform the relevant knowledge into routines. Originality/value: This paper provides empirical evidence that the knowledge application of PMPs improves organizational performance through PP. However, despite what the literature has discussed, this paper proved that AC has no effect as a moderating factor between PMPs and performance; however, AC's role significantly impacts PP through PMPs.

    (2023-02-05) Débora Bianco; BUENO, A.; GODINHO FILHO, M.; LATAN, H.; GANGA, G. M. D.; FRANK, A. G.; JABBOUR, C. J. C.
© 2022 Elsevier B.V.Humanity has faced many crises in the past, such as pandemics, wars, and economic crises, and other crises are certain to come in the future; however, emerging technologies have a role to play in improving companies’ resilience in the face of such crises. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to human, technological, and managerial constraints for manufacturing companies due to scarce resources or supply chain (SC) disruptions. The research goal of this paper is to investigate whether Industry 4.0 implementation improved companies’ resilience and whether companies’ performance maintained stability during the COVID-19 outbreak. Composite-based structural equation modeling is applied to analyse data collected from 207 manufacturing companies. The theoretical model is grounded in the Practice-Based View (PBV) theory. The research findings show that operational responses based on Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing practices, and smart capabilities enable manufacturers to build resilience and quickly mitigate performance loss in times of global crisis. Therefore, the results demonstrate that Industry 4.0 implementation provides resilience for companies through flexibility, reliability, robustness, and responsiveness. The main practical implication of this study is to support managers in achieving manufacturing performance stability during disrupted times, such as the COVID-19 crisis, using Industry 4.0 approaches to make their companies more resilient and prepared to face future challenges and crises.

Estimation of Energy Consumption in Manufacturing Lines Using Machine Learning into Industry 4.0 Context
    (2022-01-05) Fabio Lima; NONOGAKI, L. K. B. Y.; CHANG, J.; Alexandre Augusto Massote
© 2022 PICMET.This paper deals with the simulation of production lines focusing on opportunities of reducing the energy consumption. The simulation of systems is one of the pillars of the so-called Industry 4.0. It has been used a digital manufacturing software, which allow the creation of digital twins, to carry out the models. Once the model has been created and validated, a machine learning approach, more specifically a Neural Network was trained to estimate the energy consumption of the line. The estimation of the energy consumption allows to use this variable to take decisions of the production scheduling. Moreover, the neural network package is embedded into the digital manufacturing software which provides more flexibility to solve the problem using one single software tool. The results validate the proposal, and, for future work, the effective creation of the digital twin should be performed.

The influence of the eye of competence on project success: exploring the indirect effect of people on both perspective and practice
(2022-11-2022) CRUZ, C. E.; Gabriela Scur; Ana Paula Vilas Boas Viveiros Lopes; CARVALHO, M. M.
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: There is a lack of investigation on three areas of competence in the Individual Competence Baseline 4 (ICB4) (IPMA). Furthermore, some studies pointed out the importance of soft skills over hard skills, but this relationship was not explored from the project manager’s competence perspective. This paper aims to analyze the influence of project manager competencies on project success. Design/methodology/approach: The survey involved 100 Brazilian project management professionals. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using a partial least squares (PLS) approach was employed for data analysis. Findings: The competence people was the protagonist of all project success. It affects practice with indirect effects on the impact on the customer. The paper highlights the project manager’s soft skills in reaching customer perception. Besides, the competence people also impacts perspective and, indirectly, preparation for the future. Research limitations/implications: Personal and interpersonal skills enable the project manager to interrelate with the project environment (organization strategy, governance, structures, processes, standards, power and interest, culture and values) and, therefore, to open a panorama for opportunities as a new market, product or technology. Thus, the new competence area perspective introduced in ICB4 brings an important insight for this research and future studies. Originality/value: Besides investigating the effect of behavioral competencies on project performance, this research addressed the importance of looking at the indirect effects when exploring models and testing hypotheses for a complete understanding of the relationship between variables.

Lead Acid Batteries (LABs) Closed-Loop Supply Chain: The Brazilian Case
(2022-10-05) Gabriela Scur; Claudia Mattos; Wilson de Castro Hilsdorf; ARMELIN, M.
© 2022 by the authors. In the circular economy, a closed-loop supply chain is essential to guarantee the logistics of raw materials to the correct destination of the end-of-life (EOL) product. This is magnified by hazardous products that can contaminate the environment, such as lead, as well as the people involved in their production processes. Through an exploratory study of multiple cases, we analyzed the Brazilian lead-based vehicle battery chain by investigating two main manufacturers, two recycling companies, and eight distributors/retailers. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between the actors in the lead acid battery chain and identify the mechanisms that induce recycling programs, and to propose an explanatory framework. The results indicate that although the sustainability strategies of OEMs are implemented by regulatory mechanisms, the impacts of these strategies cascade among all agents in the supply chain, promoting a convergence between actions and relationships between actors from the perspective of the triple bottom line, highlighting variables for each dimension (economic, social, and environmental). The study contributes to the consolidation of the triple bottom line concepts in the lead acid battery production chain and presents managerial implications for sustainability management.

Genetic algorithms and parallel computing for a vehicle routing problem with time windows and split deliveries
    (2006-01-05) De Campos G.G.; Yoshizaki H.T.Y.; Belfiore P.P.
The present work considers the use of metaheuristics and parallel computing to solve a real problem of vehicle routing involving a heterogeneous fleet, time windows and split deliveries, in which customer demand can exceed vehicle capacity. The problem consists of determining a set of economical routes that meet each customer's needs while still being subject to all the constraints. The strategy adopted to solve the problem consists of an adaptation of the constructive heuristics proposed by Clarke & Wright (1964) as the initial solution. More sophisticated algorithms are then applied to achieve improvements, such as parallel genetic algorithms supported by a cluster of computers. The results indicate that the basic constructive heuristic provides satisfactory results for the problem, but that it can be improved through the use of more sophisticated techniques. The use of the parallel genetic algorithm with multiple populations and an initial solution, which presented the best results, reduced the total operational costs by about 10% compared with the constructive heuristic, and by 13% when compared with the company's original solutions.

Organizational learning in the context of product development processing: a case study in an automotive company
(2022-08-10) Dario Alliprandini; Gabriela Scur; Vilas Boas Viveiros Lopes A.P.; Wakatsuki M.M.
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: This study identifies and analyzes practices related to declarative knowledge of organizational learning in the product development process (PDP) that uses the Stage-Gate (SG) system. Design/methodology/approach: The field research was conducted with a qualitative approach through a case study. The study object was a multinational company in the automotive sector that is highly competent in truck chassis design with a PDP based on the SG system. Findings: The authors identified PDPs associated with the elements of declarative knowledge of organizational learning in intra- and inter-development teams. Rather than merely being a checklist, each gate in the SG system has the potential to become a more effective and robust intra-team learning practice and promote inputs for continuous improvement in the process through its use as a checkpoint of the five elements of declarative knowledge during the development activities. Research limitations/implications: The case study was conducted in a multinational company in the automotive sector, whose business units are divided by competencies. The unit studied is a reference in truck chassis and is located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Practical implications: The research model presented can be used to evaluate how companies exploit their activities and practices to leverage organizational learning in PDP. That is, the model can be used as a diagnostic reference for declarative knowledge in companies that apply the SG system to manage PDP. Originality/value: The study focuses on a model of PDP analysis, aspects of organizational learning and declarative knowledge, in that the model it assists in the collection, distribution and use of information to the development team members with a view for products with greater innovation potential.

Pull Production Implementation: An Action Research Study Implementando a Lógica de Produção Puxada: Uma Pesquisa-Ação
    (2022-11-05) VASCONCELLOS, L. H. R.; Mauro Sampaio; FONSECA, H.
@ RAC owns the copyright to this content.Context: there is little empirical evidence of the relationship between the implementation of lean techniques (such as the pull system) and their real effect on supply chain performance. Objective: the purpose of this paper is to describe the process of implementing the pull production logic in the supply chain, reporting the historical evolution of indicators, such as inventory levels and lead times over 23 months of intervention. Methods: an action research project was carried out describing chain intervention steps in 2017-2019, divided into phases as follows: planning, data collection, implementation of the action, analysis and evaluation of the results. Results: the main contribution was to demonstrate that the production shift from push to pull had a positive impact on lead time, inventory, and planning routines indicators. Inventory levels were reduced by more than 30% and lead times were down approximately 40%. In addition, sales forecast assertiveness increased. Conclusion: this paper may provide a reference for organizations that want to make similar changes in their supply chains and significantly change the planning routine of their suppliers and distributors by implementing the pull logic.

From corporate strategy to procurement practices: a case study about the strategic alignment applied to supplier selection
    (2022-01-05) Gabriela Scur; KUNIMURA, A. A.; CHANG, J.
IEEEThis paper aims to demonstrate if corporate strategy is deployed to purchasing function practices, specifically to select suppliers, considering purchasing categories. The study has a qualitative empirical approach, and it is characterized as descriptive in the specific context of a multinational life science company. Our findings indicate an alignment between corporate strategy and purchasing strategy regarding the elements of corporate strategy, such as innovation, quality, sustainability, delivery, flexibility, and costs. However, the hierarchical cascading of these elements for supplier selection practices does not always occur as in the literature. The results suggest that purchasing categories are determining factors in the strategy alignment. The main contribution of this paper is to point out that there is an alignment between corporate strategy and purchasing strategy regarding the main elements of corporate strategy. However, the hierarchical cascading of such criteria for supplier selection practices does not always occur as previously described in the literature, as there are variables that influence this process. This article indicates that purchasing categories are key determinants of strategy alignment, as in each category a combination of criteria has been more relevant and not necessarily aligned with corporate or purchasing strategy.
