dc.description.abstract© 2018 International Heat Transfer Conference. All rights reserved.The paper summarizes the development of physiology-based models of the human thermal and respiratory systems. There is an increasing interest in the development of such models as they allow the determination of temperature, blood flow rate, contents of oxygen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in different tissues of the human body, depending on the ambient conditions and the physical activity levels. Different strategies for the geometrical modeling of the human body is presented and the simulation of the heat transfer processes in the segments representing different parts of the body, such as head, neck, trunk, arms, forearms, hands, thighs, legs and feet, will be discussed. The modeling of the mass transport and storage of gases such as O2, CO2 and CO in the blood and tissues are also discussed. These models are very useful to predict the behavior of the human body under different hazardous environmental conditions such as thermal stress, decompression accident in airplanes, or compartment fire or urban atmospheric pollution. Finally, the use of these models for the exergy analysis of human body performance under physical activities and for the assessment of the thermal comfort conditions is also considered.
