Simple actions like reading a book require multiple cognitive processes, ranging from eye movement and letter recognition to understanding the message. However, this task may not be as simple as that for some individuals, as studies show that the acquisition of knowledge can be compromised due to sensory deficits that hinder the processing of information through afferent pathways, causing distortions in visual information, as is the case of Meares-Irlen Syndrome (MIS). This work investigates patterns of pupil diameter variation and visual attention maps during text reading based on the visual effects of SMI using eye tracking information to estimate the required mental workload. The results show that there is an increase in mental load at times when the texts highlighted present a greater intensity of visual distortion, experimentally revealing the difficulty implicit in this reading context, as well as showing, through multivariate statistical techniques, that the gaze and the cognitive effort show different patterns when visual information is impaired
