- Reverse open innovation: Open innovation as a relevant factor for reverse innovation(2019-01-05) CORTONESI, P.; Fernanda Ribeiro Cahen; BORINI, F. M.Copyright © 2019 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.We investigated the role of open innovation in the reverse innovation process. Reverse innovation is an innovation initially launched in a developing country and later introduced to an advanced country. Von Zedtwitz et al. (2015) developed a typology of global innovation with sixteen innovation flows between advanced and emerging countries, ten of which are reverse innovation flows. We argue that their typology can be expanded. By adopting an inductive case study, we provided a nuanced analysis of open innovation as a trigger for reverse innovation based on an in-depth case analysis of a foreign subsidiary and its network of local partners in an emerging market. Our research extended the typology of Von Zedtwitz et al. (2015) by identifying open innovation occurring in emerging markets and influencing the process of reverse innovation in multinational companies. By adding analyses of open innovation, we theorised that new reverse innovation configurations emerge. The managerial contributions are related to how multinational companies can benefit from open innovation and leverage the potential of reverse innovation to increase innovation performance and competiveness in the global setting.
- Impact of entrepreneurial orientation on strategic alliances and the role of top management(2016) OLIVEIRA JUNIOR, A. B.; BORINI, F. M.; Roberto Carlos Bernardes; OLIVEIRA, M. J.© RAE.The management literature draws attention to the gap of strategic alliances (SA) in the paradigm of entrepreneurial orientation (EO). The aim of this paper is to propose a model where EO is associated with SA, this relationship being influenced by its predecessor (top management), and EO working as a multidimensional construct. Data collected from 101 Brazilian firms were analyzed using structural equation modeling and supported those hypotheses. Improving firms' EO, particularly risk taking (RT), is important in order to promote SA. Obviously, top management can influence SA, but firms with an RT competence are more likely to promote SAs and conduct their implementation. Therefore, the present study offers the following contributions: (1) consolidating the EO construct by using it in a multidimensional way in a reflexive model, particularly the risk dimension; (2) advancing studies relating EO and SA by showing that top management has a significant influence on the EO-SA relationship; (3) the model used is robust and representative of the field of strategy and entrepreneurship as it explained 25.5% of the EO-SA relationship; (4) we suggest that EO should be used to increase SA and firm performance, which can reduce entrance barriers and business risks, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- Managerial perceptions of barriers to internationalization: An examination of Brazil's new technology-based firms(2016-06-01) Fernanda Ribeiro Cahen; LAHIRI, S.; BORINI, F. M.© 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.What barriers constrain internationalization of new technology-based firms (NTBFs) in emerging markets? This study addresses the question by analyzing perceptions of barriers to internationalization expressed by top executives of Brazilian NTBFs. The NTBFs belong to high technology, medium-high technology, or technology-intensive service sectors. Analysis of data collected through questionnaire survey reveals three important barriers: external institutional barrier, and internal organizational capability barrier and human resource barrier. These barriers are consistent with the institutional theory, resource-based view of the firm, and human capital theory. Additionally, the study indicates that Brazilian NTBFs can be partitioned into three clusters with varying extents of perceptions of the above-mentioned barriers. The conclusion section discusses various contributions and limitations of the study and provides directions of future research.
- The internationalisation of new technology-based firms from emerging markets(2017) Fernanda Ribeiro Cahen; OLIVEIRA JUNIOR, M. M.; BORINI, F. M.Copyright © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.This paper offers an analysis of the factors influencing the accelerated internationalisation of new technology-based firms (NTBFs) from emerging economies. This type of firm is typically called 'born global', and they have been reported primarily in high-tech sectors. Existing international business (IB) theories have focused consistently on NTBFs from developed countries, however NTBFs from emerging markets remain under-studied. A survey was applied to small Brazilian NTBFs. The results indicate that NTBFs that have an entrepreneur, or a group of executives with international management skills, are more likely to have an accelerated internationalisation. In contrast to previous research in the field, the results demonstrate that NTBFs that take more than five years to enter the international market capitalise on their competence for innovation and abilities in international marketing, in the internationalisation process. Therefore, this research contributes new perspectives on studies on NTBFs from emerging markets.
- In search of tools for the use of country image (CI) in the brand(2018) SUTER, M. B.; GIRALDI, J. DE M. E.; BORINI, F. M.; Maria Laura Maclennan; CRESCITELLI, E.; POLO, E. F.© 2017 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.Existing country image (CI) literature tends to focus on consumer behaviour. In contrast, this paper approaches CI from the point of view of the firm. In doing so, it seeks to identify the means by which international companies associate a brand with a specific country of origin in order to build brand values. In particular, it looks at the use of CI cues in brand strategies. The paper is based on exploratory research comprising a case study of two contrasting companies from the cosmetics industry, Natura, a domestic company, and the French-owned L'Occitane, both of which draw on images of Brazil to build their brands. Specific elements of CI used in branding are identified, and the extent to which the use of these differs depending on the origin of the owning company is explored. The cases suggest that CI can be exploited in different contexts. Through analysis of the elements used by both companies to build strong brands associated with the Brazilian CI - Natura Cosméticos and L'Occitane au Brésil - six tools are identified that can be combined by firms to deliver brand values, derived from any country, through the use of CI.
- THE ROLES OF EXTERNAL EMBEDDEDNESS AND INSTITUTIONAL DISTANCE IN THE SUBSIDIARY PRODUCT/PROCESS INNOVATION AND R&D CAPACITY(2020-09-30) RODRIGUES C. D.; BORINI, F. M.; RAZIQ, M.; Roberto Carlos BernardesPurpose – This study aims to look at the relationship of external embeddedness and institutional distance (governance aspects) with the foreign subsidiary research and development (R&D) capacity. Furthermore, it examines whether these relationships are mediated by subsidiary product and process innovation, and whether institutional distance plays a moderating role in the relationship between subsidiary innovation and R&D capacity. Design/methodology/approach – The authors draw on survey data from 130 foreign subsidiaries operating in Brazil and test their model using variance-based structural equation modeling. Findings – Results suggest that subsidiary (product and process) innovation fully mediates the relationships between: subsidiary external embeddedness and R&D capacity; and institutional distance and subsidiary R&D capacity, such that the relationship is positive in case of the former and negative in case of the latter. The relationship between subsidiary product and process innovation and R&D capacity is positive and stronger at lower levels of institutional distance. Originality/value – The research ignores the underlying mechanisms of the external embeddedness and institutional distance relationship with subsidiary R&D capacity. Furthermore, institutional distance based on formal governance aspects and their impacts on subsidiary innovation and R&D capacity are rarely investigated. This paper contributes with regard to these aspects.
