- Credit granting to small firms: A Brazilian case(2011-03-05) ZAMBALDI, F.; ARANHA, F.; LOPES, H.; POLITI, R.Transaction costs limit the supply of credit to small and medium-sized firms (SMEs). From a sample of 65,535 SME credit proposals submitted to a large Brazilian bank between January 2004 and September 2006, this research analyzes credit granting decisions. Results suggest that small firms face credit rationing and that low risk credit contracts with liquid collateral are their primary source of credit. Also, the bank captures private information through its lending relationships with borrowers, which affects its credit granting decisions. The findings reveal that the bank under study faces difficulties in expanding the supply of credit to small firms mainly because of cost, collateral-dependency and constraints due to asymmetric information. © 2009 Elsevier Inc.
- Effects of the perceived diagnosticity of presented attribute and brand name information on sensitivity to missing information(2014-05-05) Jose Mauro Hernandez; HAN, X.; KARDES, F. R.Four experiments demonstrated that as the perceived diagnosticity of the presented information increases, sensitivity to missing diagnostic information decreases. However, experts were sensitive to missing information regardless of the diagnosticity of the presented attribute information. When a well-known brand name was paired with the attribute information, novices were insensitive to missing information regardless of the diagnosticity of the presented attribute information. Implications of the results for understanding information utilization and omission neglect are discussed. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
- Managerial perceptions of barriers to internationalization: An examination of Brazil's new technology-based firms(2016-06-01) Fernanda Ribeiro Cahen; LAHIRI, S.; BORINI, F. M.© 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.What barriers constrain internationalization of new technology-based firms (NTBFs) in emerging markets? This study addresses the question by analyzing perceptions of barriers to internationalization expressed by top executives of Brazilian NTBFs. The NTBFs belong to high technology, medium-high technology, or technology-intensive service sectors. Analysis of data collected through questionnaire survey reveals three important barriers: external institutional barrier, and internal organizational capability barrier and human resource barrier. These barriers are consistent with the institutional theory, resource-based view of the firm, and human capital theory. Additionally, the study indicates that Brazilian NTBFs can be partitioned into three clusters with varying extents of perceptions of the above-mentioned barriers. The conclusion section discusses various contributions and limitations of the study and provides directions of future research.
