Exploring the readiness of a Brazilian technological university during the COVID-19 pandemic
(2023-01-05) Gabriela Scur; Alliprandini D.H.; Chinaglia E.F.; Roberto Santos
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: The paper investigates the learning practices carried out by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the transition from strictly face-to-face to remote teaching in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It also analyses how these practices could be used as a baseline to support new perspectives on learning in the technological education field. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a single-case study of a Brazilian technological university. Findings: This study’s findings indicate that institutional planning and providing support to faculty and students were essential measures for a successful transition from face-to-face teaching to emergency remote teaching. Planning includes careful selection by the HEI of the tools that make a virtual learning environment and the strategies used to replace face-to-face teaching with emergency remote teaching. Our study points out the lessons learned during the pandemic. It presents guidelines for HEIs on how to prepare for a return to face-to-face teaching, embodying some learning dimensions such as synchronous or asynchronous, active or passive, individual or collective, and mediated or not mediated by information and communication technologies (ICTs). Originality/value: The paper provides reflections on the four dimensions to support decisions to leverage learning in each educational institution. This paper's main contribution is that the concept of teaching and learning must be comprehensive and inclusive according to the particular HEI context.

The influence of the eye of competence on project success: exploring the indirect effect of people on both perspective and practice
(2022-11-2022) CRUZ, C. E.; Gabriela Scur; Ana Paula Vilas Boas Viveiros Lopes; CARVALHO, M. M.
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: There is a lack of investigation on three areas of competence in the Individual Competence Baseline 4 (ICB4) (IPMA). Furthermore, some studies pointed out the importance of soft skills over hard skills, but this relationship was not explored from the project manager’s competence perspective. This paper aims to analyze the influence of project manager competencies on project success. Design/methodology/approach: The survey involved 100 Brazilian project management professionals. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using a partial least squares (PLS) approach was employed for data analysis. Findings: The competence people was the protagonist of all project success. It affects practice with indirect effects on the impact on the customer. The paper highlights the project manager’s soft skills in reaching customer perception. Besides, the competence people also impacts perspective and, indirectly, preparation for the future. Research limitations/implications: Personal and interpersonal skills enable the project manager to interrelate with the project environment (organization strategy, governance, structures, processes, standards, power and interest, culture and values) and, therefore, to open a panorama for opportunities as a new market, product or technology. Thus, the new competence area perspective introduced in ICB4 brings an important insight for this research and future studies. Originality/value: Besides investigating the effect of behavioral competencies on project performance, this research addressed the importance of looking at the indirect effects when exploring models and testing hypotheses for a complete understanding of the relationship between variables.

Lead Acid Batteries (LABs) Closed-Loop Supply Chain: The Brazilian Case
(2022-10-05) Gabriela Scur; Claudia Mattos; Wilson de Castro Hilsdorf; ARMELIN, M.
© 2022 by the authors. In the circular economy, a closed-loop supply chain is essential to guarantee the logistics of raw materials to the correct destination of the end-of-life (EOL) product. This is magnified by hazardous products that can contaminate the environment, such as lead, as well as the people involved in their production processes. Through an exploratory study of multiple cases, we analyzed the Brazilian lead-based vehicle battery chain by investigating two main manufacturers, two recycling companies, and eight distributors/retailers. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between the actors in the lead acid battery chain and identify the mechanisms that induce recycling programs, and to propose an explanatory framework. The results indicate that although the sustainability strategies of OEMs are implemented by regulatory mechanisms, the impacts of these strategies cascade among all agents in the supply chain, promoting a convergence between actions and relationships between actors from the perspective of the triple bottom line, highlighting variables for each dimension (economic, social, and environmental). The study contributes to the consolidation of the triple bottom line concepts in the lead acid battery production chain and presents managerial implications for sustainability management.

Organizational learning in the context of product development processing: a case study in an automotive company
(2022-08-10) Dario Alliprandini; Gabriela Scur; Vilas Boas Viveiros Lopes A.P.; Wakatsuki M.M.
© 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.Purpose: This study identifies and analyzes practices related to declarative knowledge of organizational learning in the product development process (PDP) that uses the Stage-Gate (SG) system. Design/methodology/approach: The field research was conducted with a qualitative approach through a case study. The study object was a multinational company in the automotive sector that is highly competent in truck chassis design with a PDP based on the SG system. Findings: The authors identified PDPs associated with the elements of declarative knowledge of organizational learning in intra- and inter-development teams. Rather than merely being a checklist, each gate in the SG system has the potential to become a more effective and robust intra-team learning practice and promote inputs for continuous improvement in the process through its use as a checkpoint of the five elements of declarative knowledge during the development activities. Research limitations/implications: The case study was conducted in a multinational company in the automotive sector, whose business units are divided by competencies. The unit studied is a reference in truck chassis and is located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Practical implications: The research model presented can be used to evaluate how companies exploit their activities and practices to leverage organizational learning in PDP. That is, the model can be used as a diagnostic reference for declarative knowledge in companies that apply the SG system to manage PDP. Originality/value: The study focuses on a model of PDP analysis, aspects of organizational learning and declarative knowledge, in that the model it assists in the collection, distribution and use of information to the development team members with a view for products with greater innovation potential.

From corporate strategy to procurement practices: a case study about the strategic alignment applied to supplier selection
    (2022-01-05) Gabriela Scur; KUNIMURA, A. A.; CHANG, J.
IEEEThis paper aims to demonstrate if corporate strategy is deployed to purchasing function practices, specifically to select suppliers, considering purchasing categories. The study has a qualitative empirical approach, and it is characterized as descriptive in the specific context of a multinational life science company. Our findings indicate an alignment between corporate strategy and purchasing strategy regarding the elements of corporate strategy, such as innovation, quality, sustainability, delivery, flexibility, and costs. However, the hierarchical cascading of these elements for supplier selection practices does not always occur as in the literature. The results suggest that purchasing categories are determining factors in the strategy alignment. The main contribution of this paper is to point out that there is an alignment between corporate strategy and purchasing strategy regarding the main elements of corporate strategy. However, the hierarchical cascading of such criteria for supplier selection practices does not always occur as previously described in the literature, as there are variables that influence this process. This article indicates that purchasing categories are key determinants of strategy alignment, as in each category a combination of criteria has been more relevant and not necessarily aligned with corporate or purchasing strategy.

Evaluation of circular business model: Theory of Change approach
    (2022-06-05) MATTOS, C. A.; Gabriela Scur; ALBUQUERQUE, T. L. M.
© 2022 Elsevier LtdThe transition from linear to circular business models, in which companies match the financial return with positive socio-environmental impact, is increasing. From this perspective, investing in projects or organizations aligned with the principles of circularity can be characterized as impact investments. However, a challenge that emerges for these investments that is gaining increasing prominence in the academic and corporate environment is related to the development of an efficient evaluation model concerning its real impact on business. Based on the Theory of Change and in the context of circular business models, this paper aims at proposing an integrative tool to evaluate impact investments and applying it to a circular business of the home appliance segment. The articulation between the ToC and circular business models can support the structuring of an evaluation model on the production logic of the desired (economic, environmental, and social) impact. Results present that an integrative tool can provide a way for companies, institutions and investors to compare the impact investment opportunities related to Circular Business Model.

Knowledge and innovation in local production systems of ceramic tiles and the new challenges of the international competition Conhecimento e inovação em sistemas locais de produção de revestimentos cerâmicos e os novos desafios da concorrência internacional
    (2008-01-05) Gabriela Scur; GARCIA, R.
This paper aims to contribute for the understanding of the new dynamics of knowledge and innovation in local production systems from the strengthening of the international rivalry in the ceramic tile industry, by studying two local systems in the Brazilian ceramic tile industry, one located in Santa Gertrudes/SP and the other in Criciuma/SC. The research shows that the current international competitive scenario is being characterized by the China's expansion in the world market; the Spanish expansion embedded in the interaction among their glaze suppliers; and the Italian decreasing market share, despite the strong presence of machinery goods industry. In spite of this global rivalry scenario the Brazilian ceramic tile industry had a expansion period with an increase domestic and exports markets. This increasing can be seem in the huge growth of the domestic industry, not only in the expansion of the supply of ceramic tiles but also in important changes in the techno-productive parameters of the firms, motivated by some benefits that came from the clustering of firms.

University-firm interaction in the Brazilian ceramic industry: Patterns, formats, and implications
(2015-10-05) Gabriela Scur; GARCIA R.; CASTRO ARAÚJO, V.
This paper aims to study the interactions of universities/research centers with the Brazilian ceramic sector. We adopted the regional/local innovation systems literature, which assumes that geographical, social, and cultural proximity is an important element for linkages between agents. The text highlights the importance of the machine, frits, and glaze suppliers as diffusers of innovation among ceramic tile manufacturers. The participation of universities and technological institutes is limited to testing, technical assistance, and product certification. The Brazilian Technological Center of Ceramic is important because the products meet international standards. In any case, partnerships between universities/research centers and firms have become routine in the region. On the one hand, universities were able to understand problems concerning the production process and on the other hand, the ceramic tile firms realized the need to add value to products and to achieve this goal it is necessary to invest in knowledge and innovation.

Outsourcing of New Product Development activities: The case of an automaker
    (2016-09-08) PEREIRA, R.A.; Gabriela Scur
© 2016 Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology, Inc.In the context of global competition, companies are searching for strategies to stand out and gain competitive advantage. One of these strategies is the outsourcing of activities. Researches over the years have addressed the process of production outsourcing, but the outsourcing of New Product Development (NPD) activities is a relatively new phenomenon. This paper aims at analyzing this phenomenon in the Brazilian Volkswagen subsidiary in order to know the reasons why the company performs the outsourcing of activities regarding new product development. It also addresses the factors that affect the decisions of outsourcing. The analyses were conducted in the light of the Resource-based view and Transaction Costs. The results reveal two ways of outsourcing: engineering services and product development. The former occurs when the automaker is in charge of the equipment, risk and rework. The latter occurs when a set of tasks is subcontracted. Thus, the supplier is in charge of the equipment, financial and rework risks. The reasons for subcontracting are the lack of an important resource that the company does not have to complete the development internally and the lack of capability to perform certain activities, reduce costs and limit headcount.

The impact of diversification in the operations strategy of capital goods companies
    (2017-04-05) Gabriela Scur; DE QUEIROZ, R. P.
Considering that the analysis of the specific areas technology and market is reported in the literature as the main elements in the decision making process of diversification and the operations strategy, these have to reconcile the technological base with the market demand. This paper examines the impact of diversification in operations strategy in 3 multinational leading capital goods companies. The main contribution of this study concerns the understanding that different processes of diversification can help to expand the share of the company in the same market with new products based on the same technology and can help the company to enter in a new market with new products, based on different technologies. Therefore, the process of diversification of firms should be analyzed from the perspective of a growth strategy based on knowledge, so that the management of this resource should occur in conditions of maximum efficiency.
