Preserving the environment, as well as the search for sustainable products and processes, is currently of extreme importance for all fields of science. Thus, recycling of manufactured products is not merely a desire, but also a must. The aim of the present work was to investigate the mechanical and thermal behavior of a polypropylene composite containing recycled PET fibers. Interfacial adhesion between the two materials was achieved by the addition of a compatibilizer maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene, PP-g-MA. A 2² experimental design with central point was used, in which compositions were prepared by modifying PET fiber (lower level = 10wt%, central point = 14wt% and upper level = 18wt%) and compatibilizer PP-g-MA content (lower level = 1wt%, central point = 2.5wt% and upper level = 4wt%). In addition, a composite containing 5wt% PET fiber and 4wt% compatibilizer was also prepared. The mechanical behavior was assessed by tensile, flexural, impact and fatigue tests, and the thermical behavior was assessed by HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). Fractured surfaces and fiber were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Multiple regression statistical analysis was performed to interpret interaction effects of the variables. The significance level was set at 5% and the confidence interval was 95%. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural stress at 5% strain, flexural modulus and HDT temperature increased considerably after incorporation of the fibers. Elongation at break, impact strength and fatigue life under tensile loading decreased at increasing fiber content. Addition of compatibilizer increased tensile strength, flexural strength at 5% strain and flexural modulus, fatigue life under tensile loading and HDT temperature. Tensile modulus, elongation at break and impact strength decreased. However, at low fiber content (5wt% PET fiber) impact strength increased. Cristalinity measured by DSC decreased for all composites when compared to neat PP and neat PETr, except for composition with 10wt% PETr fibers and 4wt% compatibilizer and composition containing 14wt% PETr fibers and 2.5wt% compatibilizer. It has been shown that recycled PET fibers with the aid of a suitable compatibilizer can be used for manufacturing polypropylene composites.
